The $20 Gold Double Eagle was first issued in 1849 as a proof strike to launch the series. The Double Eagle debuted at a point in time when the other gold coins of the US Eagle Series had already gone through three different design elements.

Coins in this condition have light or trace wear on the highest relief points, with medium or near-full mint luster still present. The coins will be dated either 1849-1907 for the Liberty Head design or 1907 to 1933 for the Saint-Gaudens design.
On the obverse of Pre-33 $20 Liberty and Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle Coins in this set are effigies of Liberty. The Saint-Gaudens Series features a front-facing relief of Liberty walking toward the viewer with sun rays behind her figure and a circle of 46 or 48 stars around her effigy. Coins dated 1908-1911 have 46 stars, while coins dated 1908-1933 have 48 stars reflecting the admission of Arizona and New Mexico to the Union.
