Each of the individual 2018-W 1 oz Proof American Palladium Eagle Coins in this listing is a near-perfect specimen according to the PCGS. Coins with a PR69 certification exhibit full, original mint luster with a maximum of two minor detracting flaws. The PCGS accepts only flaws such as minuscule contact marks or hairlines at this certification level and they must be located outside the primary focal points.
The included DCAM label from the PCGS indicates the coins have strong, frosted design elements with deeply-mirrored, clear background fields. There is limited availability of Proof American Palladium Eagle coins with a near-perfect grade from the original mintage of just 15,000 coins in 2018.
The United States Mint first issued its Palladium Eagles in 2017. Testing the waters with this program, the US Mint only issued the Palladium Eagle in 2017 as a bullion option. These 2018 Proof Palladium Eagles were the only coins available in 2018 as no bullion version was struck.
On the obverse of 2018 Proof American Palladium Eagle Coins, you’ll find the left-profile portrait of Liberty wearing a winged Phrygian cap. This design comes from Adolph A. Weinman in 1916 and was used on the circulation dime from then until 1945. The dime was known as the Mercury Dime because many Americans believed Liberty looked like the Roman messenger god Mercury in the portrait.
The reverse of 2018-W 1 oz Proof American Palladium Eagles includes the design of an American bald eagle perched at the edge of a rocky cliff as it clutches a tree root in its talons. This design also comes from Weinman and featured on the 1907 American Institute of Architects’ gold medal.
