The original Gothic Crown coin of 1847 came about when Queen Victoria petitioned Royal Mint engraver William Wyon to create a new coin to celebrate her tenth year on the throne. Wyon sought the help of artist William Dyce in the coin’s design, and together they created what is now called the Gothic Crown. Due to the incredibly complex design elements, only 8000 coins were ever minted. The Royal Mint sold out almost immediately, and today the Gothic Crown is considered a rare treasure in the coin collecting world.
The obverse of 2021 2 oz British Gold Gothic Crown Quartered Arms Coins features Queen Elizabeth II. This design is by Royal Mint engraver Jody Clark. Clark was 33 when the design was accepted, making him the youngest engraver to have a portrait of Her Majesty chosen for coinage. Along the rim, you will find the coin’s hallmarks.
On the reverse field of the 2021 Proof British Gold Gothic Crown Quartered Arms Coin is a recreation of the Gothic Crown design. In the Gothic Revival tradition, the image shows a cruciform shield arrangement with engravings found on the Royal arms. In the background, you will find the four flowers of the United Kingdom. Along the edges are Latinate inscriptions, and in the very center are the Order of the Garter arms.
