The Three Graces are depicted on the obverse of 100 oz Great Britain The Great Engravers Collection Silver Bars. These three deities are from ancient Greek mythology, though in Wyon’s original design they are meant to represent England, Ireland, and Scotland. They are depicted as maidens wearing elegant gowns with laurels in their hair and flowers in their hands.
The Royal Mint logo can be found on the reverse face of Great Britain The Great Engravers Collection Three Graces Silver Bars. You will also see inscriptions on the reverse that read The Royal Mint, 100 oz 999.9 Fine Silver. Behind these features, there is a beautiful meander pattern.
In 1816, engraver Benedetto Pistrucci was facing criticism over a series of new designs for the half-crown, sixpence and shillings. Wyon saw an opportunity to gain some attention, so he took the initiative to fund his own project, which resulted in a 50-coin mintage of the neo-classical inspired Three Graces crown. The coin did not actually enter circulation and lacks the sharpness and nuance of Wyon’s finest work. Yet considering Wyon’s limited experience at the time, it was clearly indicative of his immense skills.
