Description
2021 1/4 oz Australian Gold Platypus Coin (BU)
Among the newest creatures to be depicted on Australian coinage from the Perth Mint is the platypus. A curious creature from the Australian continent, the existence of the platypus was once believed by scientists to be a hoax. Many thought it was merely the skeletal remains of several animals cobbled together by pranksters. However, the platypus is very real and is a unique species from the Land Down Under. Right now, 2021 1/4 oz Australian Gold Platypus Coins are available to you online for immediate purchase.

Each 2021 1/4 oz Australian Gold Platypus Coin listed here is a Brilliant Uncirculated specimen. These coins are available to you individually in plastic capsules, with multiples of 20 coins sealed together in a roller. The design of the platypus on these coins comes from Jennifer McKenna, a regular contributor to coin designs at Perth Mint.
The semiaquatic platypus is a unique species. These egg-laying mammals are endemic to eastern Australia and are also found in Tasmania. The platypus has a distinctive look that includes a bill similar to a duck, feet like an otter, and a tail like a beaver.
Queen Elizabeth II features on the obverse side of 2021 Australian Gold Platypus Coins. Her Majesty is shown here in the definitive sixth-generation portrait to grace Australian currency. This design was originally created for the Royal Mint in 2015 by Jody Clark and shows the Queen in right-profile relief at the age of 89. Her Majesty wears the George IV State Diadem in this design, a crown that is part of the official Crown Jewels of England.
A platypus is featured swimming beneath the waves in the reverse design of the 2021 1/4 oz Gold Platypus Coin. This design element depicts the full frame of the platypus as it swims beneath a large lilypad that rests on the top of the water above it. With an unlimited mintage for 2021, the Perth Mint struck these coins to meet demand throughout the year.
