Wyon’s 1847 Queen Victoria portrait is shown on the reverse of the 2021 Proof British Gold Gothic Crown Portrait Coin. This replica design shows Victoria in left-profile relief wearing the St. Edward’s Crown. We also see the top of her dress, which includes roses, thistles, shamrocks, and daffodils. Along the rim are Latinate inscriptions.
William Wyon’s professional relationship with Queen Victoria began in 1834, when she sat for a portrait. Later when she became Queen, one of Wyon’s portraits was used on the first coin issued during her reign. Known as the Young Head portrait, this design is famous for its simple, neo-classical style. In 1846, Wyon worked with Queen Victoria yet again for a new portrait. This time, Wyon departed from the neo-classical design elements of the Young Head and instead employed an ornate, Gothic style. The resulting work is known as the Gothic Crown, which was released in 1847 to much acclaim.
