The $20 Saint–Gaudens Double Eagle Coin was released in 1907 as a part of Roosevelt’s coin beautification campaign. Its artwork was created by Augustus Saint–Gaudens, whose entry was selected as the winning coin design. In addition to its artistic merit, the $20 Double Eagle carries great historical significance as one of the last coins minted prior to the 1933 cessation of gold currency.
Its impressive purity of 90.0% makes it a valuable asset by modern day standards for those wishing to add to their portfolio. The coins included in this particular collection are considered even more valuable due to their XF (Extremely Fine) condition.
Coin Highlights:
- Composed from .9675 troy oz of .900 pure gold
- Issued by the US Mint with a $20 (USD) face value
- Features the artwork of Augustus Saint-Gaudens
- Available in XF (Extremely Fine) condition
- Individual coins ship in plastic flips, multiples of 10 – 20 ship in tubes.
- Please keep in mind you may or may not receive a coin with the IN GOD WE TRUST motto.
For the front artwork of the $20 Double Eagle, Saint-Gaudens offers a classical take on the traditional Lady Liberty portrait. He depicts her in a flowing toga as she peers down upon the Capitol building from a mountain top. Clasped in her left and right hands are a torch and an olive branch, respectively. The torch symbolizes enlightenment while the olive branch represents peace. Illuminating the background behind her are beams of sunlight. As a finishing touch to this poignant piece, Saint-Gaudens frames his work with a series of stars in honor of each state.
Saint-Gaudens offers an equally patriotic image on the reverse side with his portrayal of the national bird. Here, he captures this majestic bird in full flight as he soars fearlessly above the rising sun. From the individual feathers that cover its wings to its deep, penetrating gaze, no detail has been excluded from this dignified creature. Inscribed directly above the sun is the phrase IN GOD WE TRUST. However, please note that not all dates in this series feature the national motto. None of the 1907 coins have this phrase, while most 1908 coins and all coins issued 1909-1933 have the phrase.
